Folk Song And Music
Folk Song From Story
Songs are an inclusive way in which everyone can be involved re-telling local stories through music. Nicky has written a simple song that tells the key elements of the Tom Hickathrift Story. This was used in the Enid Porter Project at Orchards Primary School in the town of Wisbech. In 2015 we were involved in a project at Mepal Primary School, funded by the Ouse Washes Landscape Partnership Scheme. This was a project using local traditions and stories to stimulate the children to write their own dramas and poems. As part of this they wrote the words to some the verses of a song about living in the Fens, called "The Grey Goose Feather". Here is the "Soundcloud" file of the children rehearsing. Plough Monday Songs
Through our work and investigation into the history of Plough Monday across The Fens we have unearthed 2 songs that were sung when the ploughboys went out begging for money. We found the words to the Ramsey Plough Monday song in local author, Sybil Marshal's book "Fenland Chronicle". Later we were lucky enough to meet local people who went out "ploughwitching" on Plough Monday until the 1960's, they sang us the song. You can hear local school children singing the song "'Ole in Yer Stocking" at Ramsey Plough Monday each year. Enid Porter collected the words and music to the Swaffham Prior Plough Monday song "A Sifting of Chaff". The words are published in her book "Cambridge Folklore and Customs", the sheet music was downloaded from the website of the Vaughan Williams Library at www.EFDSS.org.The song can be heard at the Swaffham Prior Plough Wednesday Celebrations. Mini Melodeons As part of our sessions in schools we can teach small groups of children a simple tune on a mini melodeon. |
